After proposing the idea of hosting a math tournament
in the fall semester of 1998, we realized that idea in Spring 1999 with
the Johns Hopkins University Inaugural High School Math Tournament. The
inspiration for our hosting of a tournament came during Summer 1998 when
I was helping my high school Mu Alpha Theta club prepare for the annual
middle school tournament. I thought it would be a great idea to allow area
high school students to visit the JHU campus, as well as bring some more
attention to our undergraduate math club. We had schools from as north
as Virginia, and as south as Washington, D.C. Overall, the tournament was
a success for an inaugural tourney, and we will surely use it as a stepping
stone for years to come of ANNUAL JHU High School Math Tournaments! For
more detailed info on what we did, please visit: http://www.math.jhu.edu/~mathclub/1999tourney.html
