Dear Math Club leaders or mathematics teachers,

The Johns Hopkins Math Club cordially invites your school to participate in the Johns Hopkins Math Tournament. This year’s tournament will be held on a Saturday during the spring semester (i.e. February – April) and is held on the Johns Hopkins University campus in Baltimore. The Johns Hopkins Math Tournament is for high school students throughout Maryland and beyond. It is completely student-run by volunteers who write the questions, administrate the tournament, grade the tests, and present the results.
There are four individual tests in the areas of Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry, and Calculus. For the above-mentioned subject tests, the student must be enrolled in the course at his/her high school in order to take the test. Besides the individual tests, there will be ciphering tests (again covering the four subject areas mentioned above), which all students will take. The top four students for each test from each school will form that school’s subject area ciphering team (thus there will be four subject area ciphering teams per school (Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus/Trig, and Calculus)). The top four ciphering teams in each subject area will play elimination-style rounds against each other during the Math Bowl to be held later on in the day. Finally, an inner school Team test, which will cover a large variety of questions, will allow all students from the same high school to work together on the same test. Thus, each school will have one team, which is composed of all the students in attendance from that school.
This year, Chirag Patel and Nehal Munshi are the tournament directors. If you have any questions, you can contact Chirag by e-mail at cbp1@jhu.edu or by phone (410) 516-3038 or Nehal by e-mail at nsmunshi@jhunix.hcf.jhu.edu or by phone (410) 516-2631. You can also find out more information at our tournament page at: http://www.math.jhu.edu/~mathclub/1999tourney.html
If your school is interested in participating in the tournament, please return the slip at the bottom of the page to the address below by January 20, 1998 in order to receive additional information and a registration form. If you do not respond by this date, we will assume that you are not interested. We appreciate your time and interest and hope that we can provide the best tournament possible for you and your students.
