Dear Math Leaders, Teachers, Coaches, and Sponsors,
The Johns Hopkins Math Club cordially invites your school to participate
in the 3rd Annual Johns Hopkins University High School Math Tournament.
This year’s tournament will be held on Saturday, April 21st at the Johns
Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore. The Johns Hopkins Math
Tournament is for high school students from across the mid-Atlantic region.
It is completely student-run by members of the Math Club who write the
questions, administer the tournament, grade the tests, and present the
awards. Along with this letter, you will find:
Schedule of Events
Descriptions of tests offered
An official registration form, to be postmarked by Friday March 9, 2001
WITHOUT EXCEPTION. In the past, we have allowed late registrations, but
with the increasing magnitude of our tournament, we can no longer honor
late responses.

This year, Chirag B. Patel and Ben Kibel are the tournament co-directors.
If you have any questions, you can contact them by e-mail at chirag@jhu.edu
or kibel@jhu.edu or by phone at (410) 516-2464 or (410) 516-3724, respectively.
You can also find out more about this year’s and previous tournaments at
our website http://www.math.jhu.edu/~mathclub.
Unfortunately, due to the overwhelming response to our 3rd Annual Tournament,
we must limit each school to bringing a maximum of twenty students total.
The fee for this year’s tournament will be $4 per student. This fee will
cover copying expenses, trophies, ribbons, and certificates. We suggest
that students bring Frisbees, soccer balls, footballs, etc to pass their
time during lunch and before the awards ceremony. Our grassy quadrangles
provide the best areas for recreational sports!
We will also be offering large one-topping pizzas for the price of $6 each.
Each pizza has eight slices and the choices for the topping
are as follows: pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, green pepper, and cheese.
Please do not ask for alternatives to the toppings or request multiple
toppings as those requests cannot be honored. This process is a change
from the previous tournaments and allows a school to purchase exactly the
number and selection of pizzas it desires. This change was made due to
suggestions of the survey responses from last year’s tournament.
The tournament fees will cover soda and Little Debbie brand snacks. Please
indicate on the registration form the number and distribution of pizzas
your school desires.
If your school plans to attend, the registration form and tournament fees
must be sent to us postmarked by no later than Friday March 9, 2001. Please
make checks payable to "JHU Math Club." There will be no exceptions for
late registrants! We appreciate your time and interest and hope that we
can provide the best tournament possible for you and your students!
Sincerely,
Chirag B. Patel
