Dear Math Club Sponsor or Math Department Chair,

The Johns Hopkins Math Club cordially invites your school to participate in the 3rd Annual Johns
Hopkins University Math Tournament. This year’s tournament is tentatively scheduled for
Saturday April 7, 2001 on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore. The
Johns Hopkins Math Tournament is for high school students throughout the mid-Atlantic. It is
completely student-run by JHU Math Club member volunteers who write the questions,
administrate the tournament, grade the tests, and present the results.

  • There will be five individual tests in the areas of Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus/

  •    Trigonometry, Calculus, and Advanced Math.
  • For the first four above-mentioned subject tests, the student must be enrolled in the course at

  •    his/her high school in order to take the test. In other words, the individual tests are “closed”
       to make them fair
  • The Advanced Math test is for students who have already completed Geometry, Algebra II,

  •    Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry, and Calculus (either AB or BC).
  • An Intra-School Team test, which will cover a large variety of questions, will allow all students

  •    from the same high school to work together on the same test. Thus, each school will have one
Intra-School team, which is composed of all the students in attendance from that school.
  • Finally, we will have a math relay in order to involve all of the participating students in some

  •    form of teamwork and competition.

This year, we are giving each of the invited schools a taste of what to expect at the
tournament in the spring of 2001. We have included in this packet the JHU Winter Competition
as well as the rules for it. The Winter Competition is geared towards allowing the high schools to
take a test similar to the Intra-School test offered at the 3rd Annual Tournament. Please keep in
mind that the questions on the Winter Competition are harder than the ones at the Tournament
in the spring. Since the Winter Competition is more open ended, time-wise and resource-wise,
we have written harder questions for it.
Chirag Patel and Ben Kibel are the tournament co-directors for this year’s tournament. If you
have any questions, you can contact them by e-mail at chirag@jhu.edu or kibel@jhu.edu or by
phone at (410) 516-2464 or (410) 516-3724, respectively. You can also find out more information
    at our tournament page: http://www.math.jhu.edu/~mathclub
If your school may be interested in finding out more information about the tournament, please
return the slip on the reverse of this page to the address at the top of this letter, postmarked
NO LATER THAN December 22, 2000, in order to receive additional information and a
registration form in January 2001. If we do not receive the slip from you by the end of December,
we will assume that you are not interested and your school will not receive further information
or a registration form. We appreciate your time and interest and hope that we can provide the
best tournament possible for you and your students!

    Sincerely,

    Chirag B. Patel    Ben Kibel
