I was asked to supply a funny photograph of myself, for use on the sophomores'
collection jars.
We came up with the following, taken at the home of a friend in Nara, during
my first days
in Japan (1989). Click here to see it.
The sponsors were to perform before a student audience on Nov 13. The theme
of my presentation
was inspired by the photograph mentioned above. Almost everything was about
my interaction
with the Japanese, and almost all that I referred to occurred in
the United States.

By the way, though the misleading caption of the Newsletter's photo
of me was later corrected,
that never made it into the on-line version. There was no mention of beer in
conjunction with what
was depicted in the photo, and a reference to the gift from a JAMI visitor
(toy rat) was offered
later in its place.
